Abstract:

Introduction: Elderly is considered from 60-65 years old, and 35% of all surgeries related to this age group. Surgical complications in these patients have a high incidence and to reduce these complications Bispectral (BIS) monitoring during the anesthesia can be used. This study was designed to investigate whether BIS monitoring improves clinical anesthetic delivery, recovery profiles in elderly patients undergoing abdominal surgery with general anesthesia compared to standard clinical practice. Methods: In a clinical trial, 68 elderly patients (over the age of 60) having American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status of I or III who were scheduled for elective abdominal surgery. Patients were randomly allocated to two groups that receiving general anesthesia with BIS monitoring as cases and without using of BIS monitoring as controls. To compare two groups, Kaplan-Meier test was used. Results: The time to orientation was faster in the BIS group compared to the control group. There were significant differences in the postoperative orientation time between the two groups. (P<0.001) Conclusion: Our findings indicate that, recovery time and discharge from recovery in BIS group was significantly faster than control group.

Dezocine Prevents Postoperative Hyperalgesia in Patients Undergoing Open Abdominal Surgery

Objective. Postoperative hyperalgesia is very frequent and hard to treat. Dezocine is widely used and has a modulatory effect for thermal hyperalgesia in animal models. So, this study was designed to investigate the potential role of dezocine in decreasing postoperative hyperalgesia for patients undergoing open abdominal surgery. Methods. This is a randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-contro...

Postoperative Functional Recovery After Gastrectomy in Patients Undergoing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is increasingly used in several abdominal surgeries to accelerate postoperative recovery and reduce the length of stay. The aim of this study was to investigate the pattern of functional recovery after gastrectomy in patients undergoing ERAS and to analyze factors that affect postoperative recovery. In all, 168 gastric cancer patients enrolled in a clinical...
